A lifelong passion grows

As long as I can remember, I have always had cats around me. When I was first married in the sixties I had a seal point Siamese who live to the grand age of twenty. A string of moggies came through the house some just arrived on the doorstep, one was born under the house and abandoned by the mother. In all we had four moggies –one ran away as she couldn’t cope with the Siamese, one died of natural causes and two just grew old. A very neglected red Persian and a Burmese also found their way into our house, they both went to good homes. I was now ready for a pedigree kitten so, like you, I hunted around and made many enquiries, the Internet wasn’t available then. I wanted a semi longhaired kitten with a lovely “apple” head, one that was affectionate, that I would then breed from. The first time I saw the Birman I fell in love.

Mandy joined the family

When Mandy had her first litter I was very nervous, as I really didn’t know what to expect, she definitely was not going to have her kittens where I had organised her box!

Now many litters later it has not been without heartache. I have learnt many things can go wrong. Mandy, I lost during one of her pregnancies. Another girl who used to have her kittens over several days, some still born; and for one litter she had a “Caesar” and has since been desexed during a second “Caesar” when she had only one kitten.

Country life beckons

We moved a couple of hours from the city eleven years ago. Fresh air, hills and gardens for miles around. I have built a lovely sunny cathouse for my Boys - Leo and Sunny. My kittens are born in the wardrobes and live in the family room, where all the family enjoys giving them playful affection. I like to keep “small” so I am able to socialize with the kitten and mums. At the moment I have four breeding “girls”. When breeding one needs to be very conscious of pedigrees and make sure we are bettering the breed. A Birman on the Show Bench should be as perfect as possible to the “Standards”. Most kittens that may have faults such as odd markings are sold as pets, however, many show quality kittens also find themselves settling into loving homes. 99.99% of my kittens maybe pets.

Kittenhood

My kittens are reared in a delightful, rural setting and I am very conscious that it is a chemical free environment. They are house trained and wormed; fed on the freshest of roo mince and chicken wings with the best professional dried food. All have been “Vet. checked” when they have their first Vaccinations, and are micro-chipped and registered with the Australian Animal Register. I prefer that all my kittens go to new homes desexed – this way I am responsible for the kitten’s health. They go to their new homes between 10 and 12 weeks of age.

Care

Birmans are a semi longhaired cat – they do not have an undercoat as the Persian – hence they do not require a lot of grooming, however, so they get used to it, a brush and comb every week does help with fur ingestion. You can expect that they will loose some hair especially at change of season. They are an inside cat and if they roam free they may be lost or stolen and dare I say it – they have no road sense. For complete care information, you will also receive my “Client Information pack" when I receive a non refundable deposit.

Show Time!

I have also enjoyed Showing my cats:-

My “Boy” Leo,  is a NSW Champion and an ACT Grand Champion.

“Sunny” is a BZ DB GD CH.

“Mr Lincoln” is a Champion and now a pet.

“Just Joey” a Champion and also a pet.

“Bonanza” did well as a kitten before he went to the US.

“Jazz” was Best Kitten at the Sydney Royal two years ago and is now a CCCA Ch. & GL DB CH. & ACT DB GD CH. At 2 ½  I am still showing him. Best ACT Desexed Neuter - 2007

“Tchin Tchin” is a DB.GD.CH and at 1 ½ is also on the Bench.

My Girls are Conde Jessabella, Conde Drama Girl, Shiki Camellia and Shiki Laska. Goldie is in retirement and Rosie has been desexed and found a new family home in Adelaide.

You will find that the Birman to be very affectionate, playful but not highly strung, they love company but if left during the day will usually curl up on a bed and greet you at the door when you get home. They will not leave you alone if you have been away for a few days!

You will not be sorry to own a Birman - many people have come back for a second kitten.

I truly love my Birmans.
